MIMIC

Mimic is more than a Splatsona to me. I pour my absolute heart and soul into this character, out of sheer love.
Created in 2020, Mimic was designed in reaction to Octo Expansion. They are my way of expressing my medical trauma, my life with disability, and the way I want the future to be. Mimic is an expression of both disabled sadness and disabled joy. Mimic is hope, to me.
However, I don't lay everything out on a plate. The story I tell with Mimic is delibrately vague, meant to be explored deeper and interacted with. Mimic is a mystery for the viewer to solve.

Mimic has two dedicated websites here on Neocities! Check them out:

The Basics

Mimic (まねる Maneru) is a sanitized octoling who escaped the Deepsea Metro shortly after the events of Octo Expansion. Rescued by their now partner Mantle, Mimic has settled into life in Inkopolis. Finding themselves to have an odd knack for music, they became a DJ, and their debut album Sanitized immediately took off their indie career.

Sanitized are often shy and isolating, but Mimic is the opposite. They have a happy-go-lucky attitude and always try to see the bright side of things. They want to spread joy by being happy, and believe laughter is the best medicine.
Of course, a bright exterior doesn't mean there isn't pain underneath. Mimic lives with the same burdens all other Kamabo escapees do, suffering amnesia, traumatic flashbacks, chronic pain and illness, dissociation, psychosis, and severe depression.

Mimic seems prodigy-esque, adept in not only music, but engineering as well. Perhaps it's an Octarian thing, as the species is known for their engineering smarts, but Mimic can take apart and put things back together with ease, with a special love for small machines. They enjoy hacking, using their skills to infiltrate Kamabo's weakened network and improve the functions of devices like CQ-80s.

Mimic also has an odd almost muscle memory for medical basics and procedures, leading them down the path of doing their own medical work (as the sanitized body is volatile and dangerous), and later the medical work of others, particularly other sanitized. They've shared their skills with the local hospital in order for them to be able to treat sanitized safely and effectively.
They're not entirely sure where this odd ability comes from, but they attribute it to whoever they were prior to their sanitization, kind of like genetic memory, but through brainwashing instead.

Mimic aids with their adoptive sister's rehab center for Surface sanitized, Sani Heights, helping other, often less stable sanitized adjust to life in the Surface world.

It doesn't mean they don't struggle. Mimic's health is extremely poor, and they barely keep themselves together by means of medication, mobility aids, and a lot of rest. They struggle to express their traumas in words, and have instead turned to music to tell their story.
Mimic's music is meant to tell the tale of the sanitized struggle, as well as the Octarian struggle as a whole, with borrowed stories from friends. It's the way they express their emotion and how they cope with their past.
Their music is niche and "weird", falling into the same octronica veins as Dedf1sh, Turquoise October, and DJ Octavio. It's popular in Inkopolis's underground music scene, most of their fans being other Octarians who have battled similar things as them.
People attribute their name to their ability to "mimic" the styles of other artists, their music often described as a mix of Dedf1sh and Octavio's styles.
